If you believe you already “understand” what democracy is, you are unfortunately wrong. The current standard view is that democracy is some thrown-together mixture of: “the three branches of government, the will of the people, some bill of rights, a little rule of law, knowing how a bill becomes a law, and perhaps acknowledging that citizens have responsibilities as well as rights.” This is a high school understanding of democracy, at best, and most of us never get much beyond that. 

What this course offers—for people with democratic personalities—is a more adult version of democracy. This new version is muti-dimensional, nuanced, history-based, and ultimately, more inspirational. That is to say, the adult version is much more worth fighting for.  

In sum, if you are a “traditionalist” this course is NOT for you.
